Where would we be today without the Viva, Vectra, Cavalier, Astra or Corsa? We have Alexander Wilson (founder) and Luton to thank – the Bedfordshire town most famous for hat making and perhaps more importantly the birth place of Vauxhall Motors who commenced manufacturing “horseless carriages” in 1903 with a five horsepower version complete with two forward gears and no reverse! He moved production to Luton in 1905. American company General Motors purchased Vauxhall in 1925 therefore you’ll find the Opel brand (GM’s subsidiary in Germany) is mostly indistinguishable from its UK assembly plant. A fascinating fact is approximately 80% of all Vauxhall production is sold to other countries from Opel factories based in Spain, Germany and Poland even our UK sold vehicles. Griffin House is Vauxhalls’ HQ the V and griffin emblems featured on the companies corporate identity moved from being rectangular in the ‘70’s and 80’s to circular in 2008 so both Opel and Vauxhall emblems fit both cars bonnet recesses.
The Opel Vectra is a large family car that was engineered and produced by Opel, the German subsidiary of General Motors (GM). In the United Kingdom, the car was sold under the Vauxhall marque as the Vauxhall Cavalier and later as the Vauxhall Vectra, from 1995 onwards. It has also been sold by Holden in Australasia as Holden Vectra, and Chevrolet in Latin America as Chevrolet Vectra. The Vectra was introduced in 1988 as a replacement to the Opel Ascona and itself was replaced in 2008 by the Opel Insignia, which will retain the Chevrolet Vectra name for the Latin American market
A transmission or gearbox provides speed and torque conversions from a rotating power source to another device using gear ratios. The most common use is in motor vehicles, where the transmission adapts the output of the internal combustion engine to the drive wheels. Such engines need to operate at a relatively high rotational speed, which is inappropriate for starting, stopping, and slower travel. The transmission reduces the higher engine speed to the slower wheel speed, increasing torque in the process. Transmissions are also used on pedal bicycles, fixed machines, and anywhere else rotational speed and torque needs to be adapted.
